International Day of Monuments, Round Table

The International Day for Monuments and Sites was marked by the ICOMOS National Committee in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 April 2025 at the Olympic Museum in Sarajevo, where a round table entitled ‘On Heritage’ was held. The event was organised by the Cantonal Institute for the Protection of Cultural-Historical and Natural Heritage and the Public Institution ‘City Museums of Sarajevo’. The programme included presentations on tangible and intangible cultural and historical heritage in Sarajevo and addressed various aspects of the transformation and protection of architectural, urban, archaeological, and monumental heritage in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On behalf of the ICOMOS National Committee in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the president, Dr. Maja Pličanić, delivered a welcome address to all attendees. She pointed out that this year’s theme for the International Day for Monuments and Sites, ‘Heritage Resilient to Disasters and Conflicts: Preparedness, Response, and Recovery’, invites reflection not only on the crises that heritage faces today but also on its preservation and restoration, with the aim of fostering the social, cultural, and symbolic affirmation of the communities that create and live with it. The president expressed her satisfaction at the gathering of experts and researchers, whose work demonstrates the importance of cultural heritage for the identity, memory, and recovery of communities. She emphasized that their presentations offer perspectives on the resilience of heritage from various angles, while also raising questions that are significant not only for the profession but for society as a whole.
