Appeal – Džidžikovac Residential Complex

On the occasion of the commencement of construction works on the grassy area of the national monument “Džidžikovac Residential Complex” in Sarajevo (designed by Reuf and Muhamed Kadić), the National Committee of ICOMOS in Bosnia and Herzegovina issued an appeal to the Municipality of Centar. The appeal reminded that all planned spatial interventions must be in line with the protection measures for this cultural-historical asset. Concern was expressed that the ongoing works could lead to the degradation of the national monument, and the necessity to halt these works was emphasized, along with the need to review and find a more appropriate design solution for the construction of the children’s playground.

On the same occasion, the National Committee of ICOMOS in Bosnia and Herzegovina also participated in a panel discussion addressing the current challenges of actively preserving modern architectural heritage, using the national monument “Džidžikovac Residential Colony” as a case study. The panel discussion was organized in cooperation with the Association of Architects of BiH (AABiH) and Docomomo BiH, and took place on January 27, 2025, at the Urban Design Studio in Sarajevo. In addition to the association’s president, Dr. Elša Turkušić Jurić, the panel featured contributions from Dr. Adnan Pašić and Dr. Miroslav Malinović.

Thanks to the engagement of the aforementioned associations, and with the support of the Institute for the Protection of Monuments of the Federation of BiH (represented by Robert Stergar), an agreement was reached with the administration of the Municipality of Centar, and the construction works were halted with the aim of finding an alternative solution for the construction of the children’s playground at Džidžikovac.
